Our world is charged with both the grandeur of God and the void of his absence. The seven deadly sins are the force causing that hole. They are at work in each of us. They decimate our relationships, our souls, and our world. These deadly sins often seem pleasing and good for gaining what we desire, but they are thoroughly poisonous.
Conversely, the Beatitudes are Jesus' pictures of a restored creation. The Beatitudes introduced what Jesus said to his earliest followers about a life strong and fruitful. In fact, the Beatitudes give us a glimpse of a world empty of evil and filled to the edges with God's life. Looking at the Beatitudes and the seven deadly sins in turn, we see two paths, two sets of invitations. Both call to deep places within us to come and taste. Both invite us to take up residence. Both present themselves as life as it actually is. But only one will draw us further into reality. And only one will make us happy.

Seven The Deadly Sins and the Beatitudes (Audible Audio Edition) Jeff Cook Zondervan Books Reviews

this book digs into some of the most profound insights the Christian tradition has to offer us. And the author does it in a humble colloquial way which is very engaging. Quite different from the sometimes pompous theology books I've read in the past. It shows how wisdom traditions can still inform our lives today if applied and understood in the right way. At least read the first chapter. The book is worth the price just for that alone.
This is a good elementary beginning in dealing with the subject of the traditional Seven Deadly Sins and the Beatitudes for an Evangelical Protestant audience. Classical Evangelicalism seems to shy away from discussions of "working out" salvation in daily obedience and this little work reopens a necessary dimension of Christian life. The book would have more depth and be more hard hitting if the traditional ascetic literature of western monasticism or eastern orthodoxy were utilized a bit more. Never the less this book represents another little example of the convergence of Evangelical, Catholic and Orthodox Christianity and is most welcome.
My favorite books share two characteristics --- insight and eloquence. This book exemplifies these two qualities beautifully.
Peter Kreeft's endorsement of the book is spot on when he says, "It's not just good; it's striking." The author uses words artistically to paint a picture. He paints a picture of the devastating power and consequences of the seven deadly sins upon our souls and our societies and contrasts this picture with one of a restored creation by exploring the meaning and reality of the Beatitudes. The contrast between these two worlds is so stark that it renews in me a longing for goodness --- a desire to see God's purposes fulfilled in his creation.
I wasn't prepared for how the book would challenge me. One chapter in particular helped me to see myself in a new way because I became aware for the first time that a particular sin (envy) was a major part of my thought life. This book will not help those who are indifferent or oblivious to their own sin nature, but for the rest of us this is a powerful book indeed.
Although the book is not intended this way it does show the credibility of the Christian faith by articulating so clearly the human predicament in all its utter brokenness and showing the way out that God has provided. Only the Bible presents such a bleak account of fallen humanity and only Christ can save us from this plight.
If you seek true enlightenment to our shared human condition then read and ponder this book. It may illuminate an old subject in ways you never thought of before.
It has some very strong points in this book. I recommend it to anyone. I've had it for about a year and still occasionally read it. Some things that stood out to me that I read in it are some scriptures that Jesus says about the sins. Their very bold and will strike you in a way that you've never felt before and will make you want to change your ways.
So, I purchased this book because I had read a few excerpts from it in Relevant magazine. When thinking of the seven deadly sins, it's easy to think of them in their simplest terms and; therefore, think they do not apply to you. In reading this, however, I saw how each was present in my own life. Far from feeling despondent and with no avenue for hope, Cook pairs each sin with a beatitude and a new understanding comes forth.
To be honest, of all the books I have read on sin, this is the most life changing. I would insert some of my favorite quotes in this review, but I have passed my heavily highlighted and tabbed book on to more friends. It's thought provoking and a challenge to be vulnerable and, if read with a friend, a great way to talk about sin and be honest about it. In hindsight, I have to say that this made sin discussions accessible to me, which allowed me to actual be open enough for accountability to work. I'm ever grateful to have come across this book.
I highly recommend it... Especially as a resource for leaders who have a hard time discussing sin issues with those they are over.
WOW!!! A very good book! An excellent read. I couldn't put it down. It makes you think of sin in a whole new way. No wonder God hates it so much.
What an excellent find! The author is very knowledgeable and the comparison is really a great revelation of good vs evil. I highly recommend this book for those seeking deeper understanding of what Jesus is trying to teach us all!
